Coffee is one of the most loved drinks in the world. Millions of people can’t start the morning without a steaming cup of coffee and many also like to drink coffee during the day. There are as many ways to drink coffee as there are countries. Ethiopia may be the birthplace of coffee beans, but humanity has been enjoying coffee for hundreds of years and has come up with new and unusual ways to consume it. From cheesy coffee to aromatic, spiced ground coffee beans, this is what a cup of coffee looks like around the world.
Yuenyeung (Hong Kong)
We are quite used to drinking coffee with milk, but how about mixing it with tea with milk? This is exactly how people like to drink their cup of coffee in Hong Kong. Also called Kopi Cham in Malaysia, this type of drink is a blend of traditional coffee and milk tea, which can be served hot or cold. Mr Lam, from Hong Kong, says he invented the drink in 1952 and has served it in his restaurant ever since.
Coffee with egg (Vietnam)
Vietnam is famous among travelers as a mecca for coffee lovers exploring Asia. All the classic varieties of the drink can be found there, but the most unusual one is prepared in Hanoi, the birthplace of egg coffee or cap he trung. Legend has it that during the war there was a shortage of milk, so people beat egg yolks with sugar and a little condensed milk when it was available. Freshly brewed Robusta coffee was then added. It’s the creamiest coffee ever created!
Kaffeost (Finland)
If you think coffee and cheese don’t go well together, think again. Countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway have a very peculiar way of preparing coffee called kaffeost. To prepare a cup of kaffeost you will need a few pieces of juustoleipƤ, a special type of dry cheese made in the northern countries of Scandinavia. You will have to put some pieces of this cheese in a wooden cup, pour some hot coffee on top and enjoy the drink. Dried cheese quickly absorbs liquid and becomes soft and fluffy. It’s best to eat it quickly before it completely melts.
Flat white (Australia)
Now you can find flat white in every respectful coffee shop in the world. But this was not always like this! Flat white is relatively young: it was invented in Sydney, Australia, in the mid-80s. This drink may look like a latte, but don’t be confused: it has the same amount of espresso, but a different amount of milk. The flat white is made with one or two shots of espresso followed by microfoamed milk. It is smaller than latte and stronger because it has less milk.
