Dalgona coffee is taking over the internet and the world. This new foamy coffee drink is all over social media. There are countless photos on Instagram, people are making all kinds of variations on Youtube, but we’re pretty sure TikTok is the platform where this madness started.
You’ve no doubt seen teenagers go crazy over these things, and if you’re like me, you’ve probably thought: They’re hyperactive enough that they don’t need more coffee. And although there are already many ways to prepare coffee and we are not sure we need another, this is different.
First of all, it’s not for coffee snobs. Use instant coffee. Yes, I know, stop thinking. But it makes sense that in quarantine, if you don’t have a coffee machine at home, this would be easy to recreate. It looks frothy, cool and very Instagrammable, but it’s actually very easy to make. All you need are equal amounts of instant coffee, hot water, and sugar to create the frothy mixture. And milk of your choice of course. Because the idea is to make this look like a frothy, upside-down version of a latte.
But how exactly is it done? Well, there are more than enough recipes and tutorials online. There are many classics and even some variations and experiments that people have come up with based on taste, texture, and what they have in their cupboards. But let’s talk about the basics before starting any experiments.
To prepare a serving of this foamy coffee you need 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of hot water. You mix everything with a hand mixer until it is creamy and foamy. You can also use a whisk if you want, but it will take a while to reach that foam level. Apparently it takes 400 lashes, but who has time to count them? All we know is that your arms will be tired and you can count it as your upper body workout for the day.
From then on, all you have to do is take a glass, fill it with ice and pour the milk of your choice. Top it with the foamed coffee mixture and voila, your Dalgona coffee is ready. You can probably also make it with hot milk if you prefer. Some people also sprinkle toppings like cinnamon, cocoa or sprinkles on top, but this takes it to an experimental stage and we don’t want to get into that.
