The best things to do in South Korea
Often overshadowed by Japan, South Korea is fast becoming a popular tourist destination among travelers from around the world. The atmosphere in Seoul is captivating with quiet Buddhist temples in the center of the city, surrounded by towering modern skyscrapers. Although many tourists go to the capital, you should also visit Busan and Jeju Island. Whether you’re a foodie, shopper, or hiker, South Korea will have everything you need for the perfect vacation.
Foodie
Food glorious food, there really is nothing like a Korean feast. From Korean barbecue to sushi rolls (called gimbap) and the famous spicy fermented vegetable kimchi; you will never go hungry. Be sure to try the chicken and beer, it’s a simple idea that will leave you wanting more. Dining is a huge social event for Koreans where food is shared, so grab your chopsticks and get stuck in!
Night owl
Korean nightlife is really something else. For a good night in Seoul, head to Hongdae, the main nightclub area, where you’ll be surrounded by Korean hip hop venues. Try the famous Korean drink soju while at a bar in Itaewon, and if you’re really feeling adventurous, mix it with beer! Don’t expect to hear Gangnam Style everywhere you go – hip hop is a go-to for Koreans when they go out and it’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
Hiker
Tired of bright lights? What could be better than hiking in the famous Bukhansan National Park? With many trails to choose from, you can decide how challenging the mountain you want to tackle (and yes, they really are mountains). The best time for hiking in Korea is fall, when you are surrounded by a forest of red leaves, but spring is just as beautiful. Wear sturdy shoes and don’t forget your gloves, it’s cold at the top.
Shopaholic
Are you a confessed shopaholic? Do you want to shop until you drop? Seoul is the city of his choice. With big malls, you’re never going to be spoiled for choice, and the good news is you can shop until the wee hours of the morning. Make sure you leave enough space in your suitcase!
Musician
The thought of standing in front of our friends and having to sing is a nightmare, but if you want to experience life in Korea it’s a must. You can have a big room with your friends or even try a “coin karaoke” where you can sing ballads to yourself.
