Designers and social media influencers have certainly started their fair share of trends, but some of the true legends of the style have been born from movie characters. Appropriate clothing in movies can create a unique atmosphere and a more realistic look for the characters. Many of these fads, even though the movies are decades old, have persevered and are still very popular in 2020.
White high neck dress by Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct”
Now that we think about it, Fashion Nova totally inspired Fashion Nova and tons of designers for years to come. Before this, we were used to plunging necklines and spectacular evening dresses. But this vamp dress proved that you can look elegant in a flawlessly cut sleeveless silhouette paired with a high neck bodice. For us, it’s chic minimalism.
2. Everything Rachel Green wore on “Friends”
We know Jen has mixed feelings about her haircut from this popular ’90s sitcom, but her fashionable looks turned out to be impressive every time. They gave us real, tangible, all-girl fashion inspiration that we probably still wear to this day. First, a fitted long-sleeved shirt under a spaghetti-strap, button-down dress. Practical yet elegant and appropriate for the season. Plus, that plaid pencil skirt and sleeveless turtleneck gave us a total “Clueless” vibe.
3. The style of Cher and her friends in “Clueless”
Many popular fashion brands were inspired by “Clueless,” but more importantly, the movie really helped shape the ’90s pop culture and girls’ fashion scene. There were plenty of memorable outfits (Deon’s hat, anyone?), but those matching plaid suits were everything, complete with thigh-length skirts and white knee-high socks. Teenagers and millennials alike sport those looks to this day.
4. Regina George’s group in “Means Girls”
It’s safe to say that “Mean Girls” launched a high school revolution with different shades of pink, miniskirts, plaids, and plenty of logos. Oh, and you can’t forget those Juicy velor tracksuits and that spectacular eyeliner. The looks were so iconic of the early 2000s that we wouldn’t wear them now, but we definitely sported them regularly back in the day.
5. Unusual fashion looks in “The Devil Wears Prada”
By far Anne Hathaway’s best role to date. Both Anne and Meryl wore stunning outfits in virtually every scene in this film about the cutthroat fashion industry. Fashion lovers swooned when they saw the looks of famous designers. The combinations of different styles were bold but eye-catching – bright colors and leopard print, anyone? Many of these looks were trending for a while after this movie was released.
6. The elegant retro look of “Carol”
“Carol” does a lot of things right, and atmosphere is definitely one of them. The understated elegance of all the outfits really transported us to a different era and we loved how the beauty was in the details. Vibrant colours, cleverly tied neck and head scarves and oversized clasps with thin metal bracelets. And of course, a crimson lip to tie it all together. The vintage looks were all feminine yet elegant, and have inspired women from all walks of life since their launch.
7. Renata’s bold and intense look in “Big Little Lies”
Anyone who has seen “Big Little Lies” remembers the graceful power and force of nature that is Renata. Her outfits were a shining example of how you can show power, status, confidence and most importantly, the strength of femininity in your outfits. It was thanks to Renata’s wild personality that the stylist on set was able to experiment. Her red Roland Mouret dress went viral on Lyst after she wore it.
8. The impeccable yellow dress from “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”
Yellow has never been a very popular color for women’s formal wear, both on and off screen, especially in the early 2000s. “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” changed all that with that iconic gala scene towards the end, with a silky yellow evening dress that grazed the floor and had a slight flow with a dreamlike bare back. The dress, designed by Dina Bar-El, was designed in yellow to highlight the 84-carat yellow diamond jewelry Hudson wore in the film, but after its release in theaters, girls everywhere were buying yellow evening dresses like no tomorrow.
