As COVID-19 approaches its one-year anniversary, wearing a mask has become a daily reality for many of us. We fully support all the precautions being taken in public spaces, but our skin has taken a beating during this time. Remember the days when we could stand shoulder to shoulder in a crowd of people with our faces uncovered without any consequences? Well, we are all facing a new era and so we need to add new steps to our skincare regimen.
What is the mascarnane?
Maskné is facial acne caused by the friction pressure and rubbing of the mask. Even those blessed with good skin are suffering from attacks of maskne, and for people who already suffer from oily skin, acne or cysts, it is a disaster. However, since this might be a necessary part of our future for a while, it is important to know the different tricks and tips that can help you maintain perfect skin during humid summers and dry, harsh winters.
1. All masks are NOT created equal!
The material of the mask is very important, although blue surgical masks are the most available. Disposable options are usually made to fit a man’s face and, in addition to being uncomfortable, are not made of breathable materials. Cotton is a good alternative that causes less irritation, but silk or satin textures will cause the least friction. In terms of fit, choose a mask that fits comfortably around the edges of your face. This will minimize movement and therefore that frustrating rubbing.
Also, make sure your mask has a wide brim so it’s not pressed against your mouth and chin. This lack of direct contact will do wonders for your face and help it breathe.
2. Wash and avoid putting on makeup
Cleaning your face is the most important way to avoid maskne. If you keep putting the mask on dirty skin, you’ll only spread more bacteria. Plus, avoiding cosmetics will help keep your pores unclogged and happy. Makeup already causes enough irritation, and with half of our face hidden, why do we continue to torture ourselves?
3. Nourishing skin care
When choosing your SPF product, always look for a formula that is non-comedogenic. Cleansers should be lightweight but hydrating, and a moisturizer should be lightweight and packed with antioxidants. The hyaluronic acid ingredient is a lifesaver when it comes to light-as-air moisture. Basically, as many matte products as you can find that aren’t drying.
4. Clean your mask
Just as washing your face is important to keep your skin clean, washing your mask uses the same logic. Disposable masks can’t be washed and aren’t good for the environment, so get some breathable masks that you can rotate. Using dirty masks means clogged pores and oily skin. Wash your masks by hand in warm water and detergent if possible; Please refer to the washing instructions for your specific mask.
